Project Description
DISEMBODIMENT IS A COMMUNAL ACT / EMBODIMENT IS A COMMUNAL ACT is an interactive installation and collaborative web project centered on body policing. The goal of the work is to create solidarity and accountability as the project asks us to recognize the comfort and strength in shared experience, while being conscious of where our stories diverge and may expose us simultaneously as being participants in the policing of others. The act of laying hands on a body has historically been part of various spiritual communities and healing practices while simultaneously serves as a symbol of violence and violation. This installation asks participants to examine their own role within both of these gestures, as audio stories about body policing are heard from a collection of disjointed limbs that are activated by being touched.
Bio
Erin – I am interested in art that brings community together around issues of the body and acts as a catalyst for dialogue and continued self-representation that is conscious of privilege and histories of erasure. I am interested in honoring all those who are left out of our visual environments and cultural subconscious.
